there is significantly less difference between a 5 string bass and a four string bass than there is, say, between a 7 string guitar and an 8 string (or more strings (DJENT)) instrument, in the realm of feel at least. Personally i find almost no difference at all in my playing style. If the small gap in price is no concern, i would go with a 5 string (i bought the esp ltd d4 a few summers ago... One of the best feeling basses ive ever played (pickups need some help though). I only wish i bought the d5 or the d6) For a beginner i would avoid a 6 string bass entirely as the heavier neck (more material in the neck, pushes the instrument off balance) could throw you off if you're more comfortable witht the balance found in a 4 string. 

Both have their pros and cons.  Although I have played 4 string basses exclusively, I recently purchased a 7 string guitar.  I'm sure that after I'm comfortable navigating my way around the low B string, I will add a 5 string bass to my collection.

ESP / LTD bass guitars are excellent for lower key tunning, you don`t need 5 strings. Only a G string  

If I started bass I'd probably go with a 4-string since that's all I'd probaby need, but if I wanted extended range I'd go to 5-string
