the shure KSM series, they are pure secks. one of the few mics series completely under 1k that play as good as mics way over the 1k price tag. they sound very similar to the SM's but they have balls

but if you have the money a Neumanm U87 is the all time best :p

Apart from the SM57 have you guys found any mics that get a decent sound?

what kind of sound are you looking for? and what are some of your results with the 57, if you've done anything yet?

if you havent done recording much, stick with a 57 because it is good and easy practice, and it sounds decent until you can muster up both the money and skillz to get a higher end mic.

Sennheiser e906 and a Audix i5 are great mics

Audix i5 hands down. More natural sounding then the SM57 IMO.
