POD X3 vs Guitarport

I already have the guitarport (purchased both metal and effects packs) and it's pretty decent for practice but i'm not too keen on it for recording. It could be just me but I have a hard time finding a really good tone that sounds good recorded. So recently I've been thinking about picking up the POD X3. It seems like a pretty slick device but would it be a wise purchase if it were just for recording purposes or should I just stick with the guitarport? I'm really interested in being able to run 2 seperate amp/cab models at the same time.. On a sidenote, my band is "attempting" to record our first ep by ourselves. We're pretty much all noobs when it comes to mic'ing guitar cabs and the such. I've got an Audix I-5 and a couple of mxl condensors. Would anyone have any good suggestions on mic placement? Would it be wise to use a single mic or is dual mic'ing a better idea? If it helps, i've got a 6505+ and an avatar running 2 V30's and 2 hellatone's in X pattern
