If you know your stuff, absolutely, a friend of mine uses a guitar that's no doubt older than him, single coil pups, and it has a great tone for metal, really dig it.
look at chapman guitars he plays dope metal/hard rock on a tele style guitar
any can be good, but i agree with synix, single coil wont do you any good for metal
Any guitar can be good for metal, although i'd personlly stay away from single coil guitars.
I think all guitars pull off metal, it depends on the playing. I played Amon Amarth's Pursuit of the Vikings on a fifty dollar First Act with single coils and it sounded nice.
