Which tubes?

I will soon be getting my first tube amp and I am already looking down the road at when I will have to replace the tubes. The two amps that I am considering are the Mesa Dual Rectifier and Marshall TSL 100, quite different I know, but I like them both. My question is when I am looking at replacement tubes there seems to be 3 categories HARD, MEDIUM and SOFT which I assume is the same thing as LOW, MEDIUM and HIGH? What do these designations mean and what is the sound difference? Thanks so much.

I have seen it called Early, Average, and Late, distortion. It has to do with the voltage output of the tube, if I'm not mistaken. I do know that if you get a Mesa you need average distortion tubes. The recto will use 6L6, or 6V6, or if you move the switch to the EL34 position you can run EL34 or KT77 tubes, in the power section. I don't know that much about Marshall though.
