regarding fretboards (finishes/ sealing?)

Im trying (trying...) to make a guitar, and I am on basically the last step, but before I attach the fret wire to the fretboard I would like to know once and for all. Is it ok to just leave the fretboard unfinished and put nothing on it but maybe something like the fret doctor later? Or is it an Absolute must to put some sort of sealer on the fingerboard? (if so what do you recommend?) Thanks for alll the help! :]

What type of fingerboard is it?

hmm- what I was going to say was-

If its maple, Yes. It does need to be finished

If its ebony or rosewood, no. It does not need to be finished.
