Perhaps no other guitar is as closely associated with Metallica's massively influential lead guitarist Kirk Hammett than the ESP KH-2 Vintage. A special adaptation of Kirk's standard ESP KH-2 model, the KH-2 Vintage is based on one of Kirk's personal guitars that saw duty in the studio and on stages around the world during Metallica albums and tours. The resulting "lived in" vibe, including distressed paint with small chips and pitting, lightning-fast neck, and famous "CAUTION HOT" sticker and "KIRK'S GUITAR" label, are perfectly recreated by the luthiers at the world-class luthiers at the ESP Custom Shop in Japan. But the KH-2 Vintage is more than just its cool looks. It's a neck-thru-body shred machine, with a comfortable alder body, extra-thin U-shaped maple neck, rosewood fingerboard with 24 extra-jumbo frets and Kirk's skull & bones inlays, and high-end components including Gotoh tuners, a Floyd Rose Original bridge, and a set of EMG 60A (neck) and EMG 81 (bridge) active pickups, just as Kirk's own guitar uses. Available in Black finish, the KH-2 Vintage comes with a premium hard shell case and a Certificate of Authenticity from ESP.

Was Kirk's original set up a 60 or 60A for the neck? Back in the day, when ESP made the first KH-2?

Carl N.

Originally Kirk used dual 81 pickups but switched these out a number of times over the years

If I buy this guitar from sweet water will it still come with its certificate of authenticity

Carl N.

All dealers are provided the same items when receiving guitars from us, box, tools, and COA if applicable

I found the exactly same model second hand for sale in my local guitar store. Unfortunately, it does not include a certificate of authenticity. Is there a way for me to find out whether or not the guitar is real? Would it be sufficient enough if I provide the serial number to ESP so they could verify that? Thanks!

Carl N.

ESP maintains limited production records. If you would like to send us the following information, we will do our best to help you with your request. Send an e-mail to  customerservice@espguitars.com that includes your name the serial number, a short description, pictures and the location where it was originally purchased if known. For photos please make sure to include close-up shots of the headstock front & back, back of neck plate and top of body to help with the dating process. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to date your instrument, but we will try to help! We are unable to provide documentation declaring the authenticity of an ESP instrument. (Please note: If you do not send pictures, chances are we will not be able to assist you with your request.)

Lyubomir Z.

Thanks a lot Carl. I have sent the necessary information to the email that you provided with plenty of close-up pictures! I hope that they will be able to tell if something is wrong with the instrument.
