What tips, tricks or advice do you have for learning music theory?

I have trouble teaching music theory to others. What made learning theory easier for you? Flash cards are the only method I can think of to try to make studying easier. I know there are websites that will teach music theory to you and some are better than others but what tips, tricks, or advice do you have for someone struggling?

For example,

The Major scale is made of intervals W-W-H-W-W-W-H
A Major key signature: F#, C#, G#
A chord and A arpeggio are A-C#-E
E Mixolydian is the fifth mode of A Major
A Sus chord replaces the 3rd with a 2nd or 4th

I could easily tell (teach?) any of these concepts to someone, but how could I make it easier for a student who struggles at the first step?

Thanks.

Hello,

Teaching music theory can be challenging, but there are a few tips and tricks that may help make the process easier for your students:

- Before diving into complex concepts, make sure your students have a solid foundation in the basics of music theory, such as note names, intervals, and scales. If they are struggling with these fundamentals, it will be difficult for them to grasp more advanced concepts.

- Visual aids, such as diagrams, charts, and illustrations, can be very helpful for visual learners. For example, you could create a chart showing the intervals in a major scale, or a diagram of the notes in a particular chord.

- Help your students see how music theory applies to real music. For example, you could analyze a popular song and show how it uses different chord progressions or scales.

- Engage your students in the learning process by asking them to play examples on their instrument or write out scales and chords. This will help them solidify their understanding and make the learning process more fun.

- Music theory is a skill that requires practice to master. Provide your students with plenty of opportunities to practice what they are learning, such as exercises, quizzes, or worksheets.

In addition to flashcards, there are many other resources available to help teach music theory, such as online tutorials, books, and apps. Experiment with different methods and find what works best for you and your students.

Good luck and happy teaching!
