warped neck

so im thinking about buying a guitar off a somewhat sketchy guy i work with for but for a good price. the only problem: he brought it in for me to play and the action is very high. i didnt have anything to adjust the truss or adjust the action, so i dont know if the neck is warped. the only time i have seen action this high is when my friend bought a factory defective Schecter back in 05 (problem was a warped neck)... so my question: is it possible for certain elements like humidity, smoke (the case reeked of smoke), etc to permanently warp a neck?

I suppose so... but the truss rod in there should still work so you can bring the neck back. As long as its not warped all funky creating high frets there should be no problems.
