Monitor cables (newb like q's)

I got a pair of Studio monitors some Fostex mkII or something, the guy at the store said you can use instrument cables to hook them up, but wouldn't you need speaker cables? is that guy an idiot or doesn't it really matter if you use instrument cables or speaker cables? and would there be any quality difference between using the XLR cable or speaker cable to hook em up? recommend me some good cable brands too.

the difference between instrument cable and speaker cable is that an instrument cable is shielded and a speaker cable is not.

instrument cables are placed before any amp section since they are shielded they will not get any interference if the line level is amped in any way.

speaker cables are placed after a power amp section that connects to speaker, since they are not prone to interference they do not need shielding, allowing a larger bandwidth of sound to travel into the speaker.

since you have active speakers it would be in your best interest to get a shielded (or instrument) cable.

to determine whether XLR or TSR is better we have to know the output types on your audio interface and the available inputs on your monitors.
