On the 14th, professional soccer K-League 1 FC Seoul officially announced that it had appointed former Pohang Steelers coach Kim Ki-dong (52) as its 15th head coach.

Although the club did not disclose the terms of the contract, coach Kim Ki-dong is known to receive the highest salary, including that of the K-League head coach.

Coach Kim Ki-dong made his professional debut in Pohang in 1991, played in a total of 501 games, and was called the 'iron man' as he ranked second in K League field player appearances. He has a strong overall image as a 'Pohang man' as he has been at the helm of Pohang until this season, but he accepted FC Seoul's love call and took on a new challenge.

Coach Kim Ki-dong said, “I am grateful that FC Seoul chose me, and I will do my best to show that it was a good choice.” He added, “More than anything, I think it is my role to recreate Seoul’s brilliant glory. “We will make sure to live up to expectations,” he said.

Transformed into a leader in 2013, he started as coach of the U23 national team, took over as head coach of Pohang Steelers in 2016, and took charge of Pohang in 2019, building a successful career.

He led the team to the top rankings for two consecutive years in 2019 and 2020, winning the 2020 K-League 'Coach of the Year Award', and led the team to second place in the Asian Football Confederation Champions League (ACL) in 2021. In particular, this year, Pohang achieved achievements such as winning the FA Cup and finishing second in K League 1.

The Seoul club said, “Coach Kim Ki-dong is a leader whose strengths include excellent insight into the opponent’s strategy based on highly complete tactics.”

He continued, “Coach Kim Ki-dong, who possesses excellent tactics and strong leadership, fits the club’s philosophy and direction of pursuing fun and dynamic soccer. “More than anything, he was appointed as coach because he was judged to be the right person to lead the change into a team that does not collapse easily,” he explained.

Seoul, which fell to the bottom split for four consecutive years, is aiming for a leap forward in the upcoming 2024 season with coach Kim Ki-dong. 19가이드03
