String action with power slinky

String action with power slinky

I have an Esp ltd Vulture and use power slinkys 1/2 step down. What is an average action when using 11 gauge power slinkys? DO they heavier strings usually need a bit higher action? Thanks!

Hello Daniel C,

Generally speaking the action will need to be adjusted anytime the string gauge and/or tuning is altered. Increasing the string gauge will usually require that you adjust the string slot size at the nut. If you are tuning down the tension may be similar to what it was, but it is always recommended that you re-adjust your truss rod setting as well. Depending on the perceived tension of the strings you may also wish to adjust the bridge height as a final step to hone your string action. Typically larger string gauges do require adjustments that "increase the action height" to compensate for the added material allowing for a similar path in oscillation, as the lower action could cause issues with fret buzz or magnetic pull from the pickups.

Below is a link to our ESP Owner's Manual which describes our setup basics, and as always we recommend bringing the instrument to a qualified technician to discuss and perform any adjustments you are unsure of completing.
