EMG Pots Replacement

Hi all,

***First of all, I have to apologize because I've written this question in 'ask ESP', which I think the wrong place to ask this kind of question.

I have an E-II M-II CTM, which has EMG 81-85 with volume and tone knob.

Just recently whenever I turn up/down volume pots, crackling sound appears from my amp. It's only happen about three-quarter turn from zero. The pots itself still turns smoothly. I open the back plate and I see no rust or anything. All the cables are still neatly soldered.

I guess it's time to change the pots. No music store near my place carries this item. So, I have to order it and can't return it If I order the wrong one. The store gives me three alternatives:

EMG CS-S-SPL

EMG CS-S-SOL

EMG CS-89VT-SPL

*** all the pic from google.

I don't understand all that abbreviation. Even I googled that name, I'm still not sure it's the correct item.

From those three items, which one should I choose ??

Thank you.

Well, I agree with the advice from the "Ask ESP" section; you can probably spray a bit of contact cleaner and exercise the pots (volume up and down a bunch of times) and solve the problem.

But if you've decided that replacement is what you want to do, let's find you what you'd need.  First question: are the wires soldered onto the pots, or do they use a quick-connect attachment?  I suspect they're soldered on.  If so, this is what you need:

If you're not from the US, this list might give you a better idea of the codes to use with EMG, check out this site:

If you need to order by the code, you'd want CS-VT-SPL (Volume Tone - Split Shaft)

Thank you Pushead.

Sadly, EMG distributor in my country doesn't carry CS-VT-SPL. If I order CS-S-SPL, which is strat set with split pot, do you think it will fit into my guitar ??

I'm planning to use volume and tone pots and remove the other tone pots.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I'm not from US so that above link is very useful for me. My wires is soldered type.

Unfortunately, EMG distributor in my country doesn't carry CS-VT-SPL.So my option are limted to:

- CS-S-SPL

It's strat set with split shaft. I guess it will come with one volume and two tone. If I get this, I'm planning to remove the second tone pots.

- 25K SPL POT 10mm pcterm

This is the name from EMG distributor. I don't know what is it because I can't find it on google or the link above. Its price is wayy cheaper than CS-S-SPL.

Which one should I buy ??

It's hard to say, I can't find a lot of other info other than what the link I sent you shows.  I suspect the Strat set above will work.
