Need advice on choosing Pick-ups.

Hey guys ( and gals), I hope this is the correct forum, but my question seemed like it could fit in multiple forums... I recently bought an LTD KH-202 Lefthanded, with ESP Passive Pick-ups, keeping in mind that I wanted to put in EMG's in that very same guitar. After some browsing I figured I wanted at least an EMG 89 in my guitar, but I hav some things I can't decide; - What is the difference between the 89 and the 89x? - Shall I put the 89 in the bridge or the neck? - What pickup should I place as the other pick-up? On my Explorer I have the 81/60 set-up, and I must admit I like it very much, but I don't want this guitar to be 100% the same. Futher information; I play very versatile music styles; from rock to pop to metal to heavy metal. That's why the splitting option for the 89 grabs me. I would like to be able to get the Jimi Hendrix sound out of my KH, but also remain able to play some good Metallica ( TBA style), or some other heavy metal. Anyone has any suggestions? Thanks, Joerie

if my memory doesn't feel like screwing me over than the EMG X series is just EMG's with a higher output. And, according to Google Search, it is EMG's answer to the Seymour Duncan Blackouts and/or Livewire.

Not true. The X's actually have a little lower output, but much increased headroom and "openness". More "organic" if you will.

i really dig the 85/89 combo that my friend had on his hellraiser

If you know the 85, the 89 is just an 85 that can be split as a single coil. The 85 is mostly used in the neck position (because Zakk Wylde decided so ^^) but it works very fine in the bridge as well, as brandono61cr suggested. I don't think you will want to split your bridge pickup, so I would put the 89 in the neck position.

As for your bridge pickup, either take the 85 as I suggested, or there still is the 81. I am used to the 81, you have it in your other guitar, see if you want to keep this sound. Or take the 85 if you want smoother sound than what the 81 delivers.

I'm not a specialist for X series, but I have heard the difference to the standards is not so important. I heard they are worth trying if you use a tube amp, if not, better go with the standards. But I wouldn't take this too seriously, if someone here tells you I heard bullshit, I probably heard bullshit.

FFS, you won't get the "Jimi Hendrix" sound just by coil splitting a humbucker
